Why We Banned Our AI From Doing Math (And Built a CFO Agent Instead)

A CEO asks their new business chatbot: "What was our net profit margin for the Smart Factory project last quarter?"

The chatbot scans a vector database, retrieves three text-chunked PDF invoices, misunderstands a vendor refund, hallucinate a currency conversion, and confidently outputs: "34%."

The reality? It was 12%.

This is the terrifying reality of the current AI hype cycle. Large Language Models (LLMs) are probabilistic linguistic engines designed to predict the next most likely word. They are not calculators. When business software relies on standard RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to analyze financial data, they are playing Russian roulette with the P&L.

At ByteTect, we realized early on that business dashboards cannot afford standard deviations in their math. So, within the OMAS (Organizational Multi-Agent System) platform, we banned our AI from doing math.

Here is how we architected a deterministic CFO Agent that executives can actually trust.

The Architectural Shift: Tools over Tokens

In the OMAS LangGraph architecture, if a user asks a financial question, the Orchestrator node immediately routes the request away from standard generative agents and hands it to the financial_analyst_node.

We gave this agent a ruthless system prompt: "You are Bytetect's CFO. You do not guess or hallucinate numbers."

Instead of reading text chunks, the CFO agent is armed with strict, deterministic Python tools: get_financial_records and execute_sql_query. When queried, the agent translates the natural language request into a precise SQL query executed directly against our PostgreSQL ledger.

Hardcoded Guardrails: The "APPROVED" Rule

Even if an LLM generates a perfect SQL query, data integrity is paramount. What if the database contains draft invoices or pending expenses?

We hardcoded business logic directly into the tools, removing the burden of accuracy from the LLM entirely. For example, our financial tools force an algorithmic filter at the database level:

By enforcing status = 'APPROVED' at the ORM layer, we ensure the CFO agent physically cannot access or aggregate unverified data. It only reads immutable ledger entries. It then uses standard Python math (net_margin = total_income - total_expenses) to calculate the exact figures, returning them to the LLM purely for formatting.

Bridging the Gap: Structured JSON vs. ASCII Charts

The second major flaw with AI chatbots in finance is the output. Executives don't want to read a markdown table or an ASCII chart; they need real, interactive dashboards.

We engineered the CFO agent to bypass text generation entirely when visual data is requested. We enforce a strict JSON schema in the prompt:

When this JSON is generated, our polisher_node (the final step in the OMAS graph) detects the payload. Instead of rewriting it into conversational prose, it explicitly bypasses the text parser and pushes the raw JSON over WebSockets to our React frontend.

The result? The user asks a question, the agent writes the SQL, Python does the math, and the React UI dynamically renders a native, interactive Recharts component in real-time.

AI integration is not about building a smarter chatbot; it is about building an orchestration layer that knows exactly when to be creative (drafting a marketing email) and when to be absolutely, mathematically deterministic (calculating project ROI).
